A couple of months ago, I saw the most moving documentary: “Saving Face.” It is the story of several Pakistani women who were burned with acid by their husbands.
It may sound incredibly depressing, but I urge you to keep an open mind for this Academy Award winning documentary. You will find yourself emotionally engaged with each of the profiles, touched by Dr. Mohammad Jawad who has returned from London to perform plastic surgery, and cheering the attorneys assisting the women in changing laws. Each of them only one person, and yet working so diligently to change their world. Their actions will inspire and humble you.
I loved the final interview with Dr. Jawad where he states, “In a way I’m saving my own face because I’m part of this society which has this disease. I am doing my bit, but there’s only so much I can do. Come join the party.” Absolutely.
