Crazy cleanses, 500 calories a day, a slew of protein shakes only… At this point in January, the new diet fads are starting to fade.

Maybe you’re not ready to go overboard, but you want to switch things up. You want to eat clean, but going vegan or Paleo overnight seems like too big of a leap. Start with baby steps and add some soup to your menu mix.

Of course you’re not thinking about loading up on cans in the grocery store! There’s so many things to love about doing it yourself like:

  • Most soups use pantry ingredients;
  • Many soups come together in 30 minutes, making it the perfect weeknight meal. With a short time investment on the weekend, you can also load up your freezer for the week. (If you’re like me, even the best plans start to go haywire around Thursday);
  • It’s simple to customize basic recipes like chicken soup with your favorite flavors; and
  • They’re easy to make if you’re a beginner cook. And only one pot!

It’s cold out there! Give quick minestrone (with kale), a classic tomato soup with grilled cheese croutons or even an exotic soba noodle bowl a try this week. And if you’re looking for a delicious detox, check out the Food & Wine post-holiday detox slideshow for healthy, appetizing ideas or try making your own bone broth.
